Brief History of Abdullahi Fodiyo Library Complex
The vision of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto is “to be a centre of excellence in terms of teaching, research and community service in all fields of human endeavours” (Strategic Plan, 2011-2015). Accordingly, the Abdullahi Fodiyo Library has, since its inception in October, 1977, continued to play a crucial role in the actualization of this vision through the provision of necessary information resources to staff and students of the University whose population now stand at about 2000 and 18,000 respectively.
At the inception of the University in October, 1977, the Library was temporarily housed in a small building which had the capacity of accommodating only 50 readers at a time. Later, it was expanded into three wings in the 1979/1980 Academic Session. This made it possible for the Library to provide additional spaces not only for reading but also for the expanding collection, reference services and staff offices, including the Office of the University Librarian.
The movement of six faculties from the City Campus to the Main Campus in the 1981/1982 session had also necessitated the transfer of the Main Library along with these faculties. In the absence of any library structure at the Main Campus, a multi-purpose large hall (initially meant to serve as auditorium) was converted into a temporary Central Library. The large hall had a usable area of 1.165m2 and the capacity to house about 75,000 volumes of books and 840 periodical titles and accommodate 242 readers at a time (Balarabe, 1995). However, due to rapid expansion of the collection and rising staff and students’ population over the years, an ultra-modern two-storey central library complex was constructed and officially opened for use on 9th November, 2009. The Library is officially named Abdullahi Fodiyo Library Complex. Ever since, the Library has continued to grow and developed into a complex system in terms of branches, collection, staffing, facilities, services and operation as discussed below.
The Main Library and Its Branches
The Abdullahi Fodiyo Library Complex comprises the Main Library and seven branch libraries, which were created specifically to promote the teaching, learning, research and community service activities of the various faculties, departments and research centres of the University. The Main Library consists of the following major sections and facilities with each one of them serving specific functions aimed at achieving the overall objectives of the Library and the University.
1. General Administration and Office of the University Librarian
2. Collection Development
3. Processing (Cataloguing and Classification)
4. Serials
5. Readers Services
6. Reference
7. Media (Audio Visual)
8. Africana/ Documents
9. Information and Communication Technology(ICT) and E-Library
10. Research and Bibliographic Services
11. Arabic /Islamic Collection
12. Reserve Book and General Lending Collections/ Reading Areas (Arts and Education, Management and Social Sciences, Science and Agriculture)
13. Study Carrels
14. Bindery Unit
15. Facilities (Staff Common Room, Television/ Newspaper Lounge, photocopy services, etc)
The branch libraries are located at the Main and City Campuses as well as the University Teaching Hospital. Three Libraries are located at the Main Campus viz: Law Library, Management Sciences Library, Social Sciences Library, MELL Library and Arts Library. Those located at the City Campus and the University Teaching Hospital respectively include Veterinary Sciences Library, School of Matriculation Studies Library, Medical Library, Pharmaceutical Sciences Library, Medical Laboratory Sciences Library, Nursing Library, and Radiography Library. In addition to the existing Libraries in the Permanent site, efforts are being made towards the establishment of additional branches in the Faculties of Agriculture, Engineering and Veterinary Medicine. Furthermore, there is a deliberate plan for the establishment of departmental resource rooms, so as to decongest both the Main Library and the faculty libraries and also facilitate closer access to available learning resources by staff and students at the departmental levels.
